Having spent my childhood in the Australian bush and sea I have witnessed in my lifetime the increasing ferocity of natural disasters such as bushfire and floods. Within this context my current body of work Scale investigates the changing state of ‘nature’ within the Anthropocene: the current geological age where humanity and it’s systems are the dominant influence on the climate and environment.
My work sits within the context of artists who work directly with the environment and natural materials such as land artist Robert Smithson, through his ideas concerning entropy, which can be defined as disorder and order or growth and decay and contemporary artist Bonita Ely who explores environmental and socio-political issues.
My work is materially based, mostly using bushfire charcoal to imbue a sense of the impact of human activity and interests upon the environment, with a particular focus on industrial agriculture. My paintings are a response to my charcoal installations and are abstracted topographic and aerial views, mapping and logging events associated with climate change.
